He was only nineteen years old when he was sent to the front lines
A hero to be, fighting for his beloved country
One of the hundreds of thousands of homeless vietnam vets
Asking for any help he can get
Is there anything that you can do, to help get him through
to the next long day of standing on the corner, holding up a sign, asking for help?
He's reaching out to you from the outside
Has no one to turn to on the outside
No one to understand out on the outside
Alone
On the outside
He still remembers how hard it was to leave his only true love
To a brave young soldier constriction called fulfilled his duty only to be blackballed
Now he's asking for your help I know you see him there standing on the corner
He's wearing his purple heart, suffering from post traumatic disorder
You look away and drive as fast as you can, you should know you owe it all to that man
who's standing on the corner holding up a sign asking for help
He's reaching out to you from the outside
Has no one to turn to on the outside
No one to understand out on the outside
Alone
On the outside
There is something about a wild lone wolf he can relate to
Out there on its own, making it alone, howling at the moon.
Awooooooooooo

"The mission was simple, you just go on patrol and rout out the enemy. But a little lost child and a weeping widow were the only people that he could see. Then a roadside bomb took out his truck and cut his comrade in two. It was only through the grace of God that he didn't die there too. Now he's standing at the gates of Babylon, wondering how this came to be. Standing in the Garden of Eden, fighting an invisible enemy."
From my song "The Gates". When the fighting is prolonged and the justification for killing other human beings becomes blurred between self defense and political, religious, or monetary reasons, our warriors have problems dealing with the death and destruction they are contributing to. The ideals of bravely and honorably protecting our own fade when the objective is not clear and there is extensive collateral damage to the nonaggressive populace including women and children. This was the case in the Viet Nam war and is the case in the Gulf wars. May God bless our troops, and may God's judgement fall on those who send them in defense of our country under false pretenses.
Wow. That is heavy. I totally agree.
